Singapore to Medan is a rail journey for part of its length and an honest slog for the rest: 8 legs (4 on rails, 2 by sea, 2 by road) across 3 countries, with 2 frontiers in between. The one to watch: JB Sentral ↔ Woodlands has a moving part. It works and it is comfortable enough, but the journey here is transport rather than the reward — plan the stops, not just the legs.

Stations that catch people out
- Singapore (HarbourFront) Rail dead end. Everything onward from here is a boat.
- Gemas Junction for the East Coast "Jungle Railway". No longer a forced change for KL–JB since the Dec 2025 electrification.
- Butterworth This is the station for Penang. George Town is across the water — the ferry berths beside the station.
- Medan North Sumatra's rail fragment reaches nothing else. It does not join the southern Sumatra network or Java.
