The water is the point here rather than a gap in the railway — this is a journey people take deliberately, and the slow version is the good version.

The trap. The bridge is several kilometres outside both towns, so the crossing is two tuk-tuk rides with a bus in between. Do it the afternoon before the boat, not the same morning — the slow boat leaves Huay Xai early and does not wait.

Where an operator cannot be booked from abroad — the Laos–China Railway above all — an aggregator is the practical route in. They add a fee, and some sell tickets they do not yet hold and buy them when inventory opens, which is a genuine cancellation risk on a scarce sleeper.
